River Cruise 120212

Instead of spending the weekend for another shopping spree while my bank account is getting closer its foundation, my friend and I took a stroll around the city hopping from one bus to another and walked for the most part of it. The highlight of the day is definitely the impulse jump into the Singapore River Cruise departing from Clarke Quay. Besides, it was starting to rain, and walking in the rain was not an attractive option.

The river taxi costs S$17/adult for a 40-minute loop. The longer one costs extra S$5. I saw some people used it for one way trip (from Clarke Quay to the Merlion/MBS and vice versa) and their ticket was S$8 for each single trip which I think it’s an expensive way to do the sightseeing. They could end up spending 3 tickets (3 x S$8) to jump between the stops.

But well, I am no expert. After all this was my first Spore River Cruise. I have visited all those spots by way of taxi, walk, bus etc… But this was my first Singapore view from the river. There’s a video that explains all the areas that we passed by, with some historical and current reference that are good to know.

I was amused to know that the “coolies” is actually “kuli” in Bahasa. When I saw the word “coolies” on the video and watched the hard labour who worked around the riverbank on the old times, I couldn’t find the meaning of it and thought it’s just a jargon for something. But then I realized, the real word is “kuli”. Perhaps, to make it easier for the Westerner to say it, it’s written as “coolies”. They sound simply the same,: kuli and cooly. Aw, kewl!
